Razor burn is an uncomfortable and irritating skin condition that often occurs after shaving, waxing or trimming body hair. You will recognize it by redness, itching and sometimes even uncomfortable pain. While it can be quite a nuisance, the good news is that it can be treated quickly and effectively with some new and innovative products.
Here is a routine focused on using the Hydrogel Vajacial Mask to soothe razor burn in only 10 minutes.
By using our Hydrogel Vajacial Mask you'll see smoother skin and less redness. The process for reducing redness and razor burn with a Hydrogel Vajacial Mask is very simple. You'll open the mask and apply it to your razor burn. After application, you will relax for 10 minutes as the Hyaluronic Acid and Aloe Vera begin to hydrate the skin and soften the appearance of redness.
We recommend finishing this routine by applying an Ingrown Hair Oil, as that will further hydrate and speed up the process of healing razor burn.
A hydrogel mask is jelly like mold that is typically formulated with ultra hydrating ingredients, such as Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, and Glycerin. You'll typically find hydrogel masks for the face, but you can now find a hydrogel masks formulated for your pubic region, where razor burn is very common.
If you are shaving your bikini line you may experience razor burn. The Hydrogel Vajacial Mask is formulated to soothe razor burn in as little as 10 minutes. The fast acting ingredients provide deep hydration. To do a vajacial at home you can follow 4 basic steps.
Below you'll find results of using the Hydrogel Vajacial Mask for razor burn. This is 10 minutes after a bikini wax.
You'll typically see razor burn last roughly one week. However, depending on your skin type and treatment you'll see this reduced or lengthened. If you are itching your razor burn, which is common, it will last significantly longer. If you are treating your razor burn with a hydrogel mask and soothing oil you'll be seeing faster results.
]]>Folliculitis is a common skin infection/inflammation of the one or many hair follicles. It can occur anywhere on the skin that is covered in hair and usually resembles a red, painful pimple. Folliculitis is often referred to as razor burn, barber's itch or hot tub rash.
Folliculitis can happen when our hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing, a blockage of the follicle, shaving or waxing. Those damaged follicles can then be infected with Staphylococcus aureus (a bacteria). The cause of the infection can be either bacterial, fungal, mites, or by a noninfectious way - such as when hair curves back into the skin and causes the inflammation.
Waxing can absolutely cause folliculitis. When the hair follicle is injured or damaged during the hair removal, it becomes vulnerable to staph bacteria. One other common form of folliculitis from waxing that can occur, is the ever dreaded ingrown hair. Which can be prevented and control by exfoliating and moisturizing.
If you find yourself with a case of folliculitis, it is recommended to not wax. Waxing over it can cause it to be even more inflamed and annoying, so just wait it out until is has subsided and remember to take care of it.
Most cases of folliculitis can last anywhere from 7-10 days.
At home treatments will work nicely for those mild cases. Apply a warm, moist washcloth to the area several times day, this will help relieve any discomfort and help the area drain. Nonprescription antibiotics, soothing lotion or cream, as well as keeping the area clean. Most importantly, protect the skin! Stop all waxing, shaving and exfoliating until the area has cleared.
If your case of folliculitis doesn’t subside or gets worse during your at home treatments, seek out advice from your doctor who can prescribe you an over the counter medication.
Keeping up a good routine of cleansing and exfoliating the areas that you wax, will keep bumps and ingrown's from forming. Moisturize every single day and exfoliate 2-3 days a week!

As the winter months approach, it’s time to think about winter skincare. Cold temperatures, dry air, and harsh winds can take a toll on your skin, leaving it feeling dry and irritated. But with the right winter skincare routine, you can keep your skin looking and feeling hydrated and healthy all season long.
One of the most important aspects of winter skincare is moisturizing. Your skin needs extra hydration to counteract the effects of the cold, dry air. Look for a moisturizer that is specifically formulated for winter weather and apply it twice daily.
Another important part of winter skincare is exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin helps to remove the dry, dead skin cells that can accumulate during the winter months. This will help keep your skin looking and feeling smooth and soft. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub twice a week to help keep your skin looking its best. Finally, don’t forget to take care of your bikini line.
The cold weather can dry out your delicate skin in this area, making it more prone to irritation and ingrown hairs. Regularly exfoliating your bikini line can help keep it smooth and free of ingrown hairs.
Use an exfoliating scrub or a wet washcloth to gently exfoliate the area. Then, moisturize with a light, non-irritating moisturizer.
Following these winter skincare tips can help keep your skin looking and feeling healthy all season long. And don’t forget to take extra care of your bikini line to keep it smooth and irritation-free.
Winter dry skin is often caused by lack of humidity or moisture in the air. If you live in climates like the North East USA or Canada you've likely experienced a dry winter. With indoor heating on you'll often see your heating bill going up and your humidity going down, sometimes between 20%. Your skin thrives between humidity levels of 30% to 50%.
]]>When it comes to the bikini area, exfoliation provides even more benefits! This blog will go over why you should be exfoliating your bikini line.
Before we dive in, when we say down there we are talking about the vulva minus the entrance of the vagina. You should never exfoliate the inside of your vagina or put any cleansing products inside the vagina for that matter. Now that that's covered, let's get into it!
1. Helps prevent skin concerns caused by hair removal
2. Promotes overall skin health
Exfoliating your bikini area is a crucial step to help prevent common skin concerns caused by hair removal, namely: razor burn, razor bumps, and itchy pubic hair.
Razor burn is the result of an unpleasant interaction between the razor blade, body hair, and skin. The symptoms of razor burn include; redness, irritation, discomfort, and stinging. Dry skin is a common cause of razor burn. When the skin lacks moisture, it can become rough. Dragging a razor on an already rough surface can aggravate the skin and lead to uncomfortable razor burn.
Learn more about razor burn by following our blog dedicated to all topics surrounding razor burn.
Razor bumps, also known as ingrown hairs, are hair strands that grow back into the skin, as opposed to growing up and through the skin’s surface. Ingrown hairs are often accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms such as redness, itching and even acne-like bumps. Razor bumps are typically caused by clogged pores. When the pore is clogged, the hair strand cannot break through the opening and instead will curl back down underneath the skin’s surface - causing an ingrown hair.
Itchy pubic hair is a very frustrating yet common skin concern. Itchy pubic is much more common than you'd expect. Learn more about how to reduce itchy pubic hair in our blog.
What’s worse? All of these skin concerns typically come as a package deal. But I have great news - exfoliating can help prevent and even treat all of these concerns!
Exfoliating will prevent razor burn by softening the skin. When the skin is dry, it becomes very rough and easily irritated. The blade therefore has to tug and rub the skin to remove hair as opposed to gliding smoothly. This action creates micro-abrasions on the skin which can lead to razor burn. Restoring the skin’s moisture is important to ensure that the blade and the skin have the most gentle interaction. Using our Sweet Escape or Nude Exfoliating Scrub will soften the pubic skin and ensure that the blade glides along the skin with ease.
Exfoliation will prevent razor bumps by unclogging the pores and letting the hair follicles breathe. Exfoliating will remove dead skin and activate the skin's cell turnover process. Without proper exfoliation, your older skin cells can block up your pores. This can turn into ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are bad news because they can get infected and cause dark spots (learn more about post inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Using a combination of nourishing ingredients and essential oils, our sugar scrubs will deep clean out your pores and promote normal regrowth.
Pubic hair is coarse, wiry, and curly. It’s thick texture can cause irritation to the skin as it begins to grow back. The skin will respond by itching. Exfoliating with any of the Bush Balm™ ultra-hydrating sugar scrubs help soften the skin and hair and allow the hair to grow back seamlessly without itching.
Even if you don’t remove skin down there, regular exfoliation is important for your skin and body's health. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that sit on the surface of the skin and clog the pores. By removing these your body is more receptive to lotions, moisturizers and oils. Exfoliation, whether it be with a dry brush, or sugar scrub, or both, will physically remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin to let the pores breathe.
Just like exfoliating before shaving, it’s also important to exfoliate before you wax or sugar.
Apart from ingrown hairs, exfoliation before waxing is also suggested to help clear out the clogged pores and hair follicles to reduce the risk of rashes, redness and infection.
We asked licensed esthetician and owner of Wax Junkie Kimberly Avalos how often someone should exfoliate and how exfoliating can help prepare your skin for a Brazilian wax. According to Kimberly, “...exfoliation should be done 2-3 times a week, as well as nourishing and hydrating your skin and prepping your skin right before a Brazilian wax”.
We recommend exfoliating prior to shaving your bikini line, as this will soften the skin and hair preparing it for shaving. Additionally, it's not recommended to apply an exfoliant immediately after shaving your pubic area, but to wait a day or two, so the skin is less sensitive.
Use a gentle exfoliating scrubs for your bikini line and pubic area prior to shaving. We recommend staying away from harsh chemicals or exfoliants that are too aggressive for the sensitive skin in your pubic area. Typically a sugar based scrub with natural oils is common to use.
The bikini area is made up of very sensitive skin, so when it comes to choosing an exfoliator you should be very picky.
Sugar-based scrubs are less abrasive than many other scrubs and dissolve easily in warm water. Using any one of the Bushbalm™ exfoliating scrubs will reveal a fresh, healthy, and supple layer of new skin. Our sugar scrubs will give your skin an irresistibly smooth look and feel. Each scrub is packed with star ingredients like Jojoba Oil and Copaiba Oil which coat the skin to create a hydrating protective barrier to external agents.
Dry brushing your bikini area is a great way to buff away dead skin and prevent ingrown hairs. We asked Meaghan, licensed aesthetician and owner of Skin Studio Beauty Co., for some tips on how to use a dry brush along your bikini line:
“Dry brushing your bikini line is just as easy as dry brushing anywhere on your body...to begin, take your dry brush and turn it sideways instead of having it flat, work right along the bikini line until you get to the pubic bone area. Once you are there, work right across the pubic bone with quick small upwards strokes.”
When exfoliating your bikini line with the Nude Exfoliating Body Scrub, or the Sweet Escape Exfoliating Body Scrub, use your hands and work the scrub into the area. You should be using about a quarter amount of the sugar-based scrub and work in a small circular motion. Once you are done, rinse the area well. Do this after you've already cleaned the area. Once you are done, apply one of the Bushbalm™ soothing oils to help moisturize, keep skin soft, and prevent ingrown hairs.
A proper skincare, everywhere routine starts with proper preparation and clean skin. First, it’s extremely important to note that you should not clean your vagina. Your vagina is literally inside of your body, and it is a self-cleaning machine that does not require skincare products. What you can and should be cleaning is your vulva. The vulva is the outer part of the female genitals, like your labia (aka “lips”), clitoris, and clitoral hood. You can clean your vulva the same way you clean the rest of your body - just with a bit more caution and care. Here are some easy steps to follow next time you are cleaning down there, as well as a recommendation for what to use as a vaginal wash.
Learn more about how to clean your vagina and vulva in our dedicated guide.
It’s only natural to have skin irritations occur. From ingrown hairs to dark sots and razor burn around the bikini line. Gently massage a natural soothing oil to your bikini area after exfoliating, specifically on places where razor burn, ingrown hairs, and other skin irritations occur when removing hair. Try applying Nude Oil to reduce the appearance of bumps, razor burn, and ingrown hairs along the bikini line.
You should always do a small patch test before introducing any skincare product to your routine. According to a board certified aesthetician, Dr. Arumula, "prior to using a product, always test it in the crook of your arm (see above). If you do not form a reaction, this product will probably work well on your vulva. If you notice after switching products that you start to have vulvar or vaginal irritation, excessive discharge or foul-smelling odor, discontinue to product and call your gynecologist."
Yes! Overtime razor bumps can go away. It's common for irritated bikini bumps to turn into a dark spot. To diminish the appearance of these dark spots and razor bumps you'll want to exfoliate regularly and use a dark spot treatment.
A guaranteed way to prevent razor bumps is to invest in products that are designed to soothe and treat the skin before and after hair removal (see here). That said, I have some tips and tricks to make the interaction between blade and skin as gentle as possible. This blog will do a deep dive into eight shaving techniques to avoid razor bumps.

A guaranteed way to prevent razor bumps is to invest in products designed to soothe and treat the skin before and after shaving. Shaving your pubic region is a very sensitive area, as the skin tends to be thinner.
Read these tips and tricks to make the interaction between blade and skin as gentle as possible when shaving your pubic region. This blog will do a deep dive into eight shaving techniques to avoid razor burn while shaving down there, and everywhere on your body.
Move the razor in the same direction that your hair grows. This will guarantee a more comfortable shave. Shaving with the grain minimizes tugging on the skin and hair. Whereas shaving against the grain increases the risk of irritation, nicks, cuts, and razor bumps.
Map out your stubble and determine the direction of growth. Run your fingers over your hair to determine the direction your hair is growing. If it feels smooth and soft, then you’re moving with the grain. If it feels prickly, you are moving against the direction of growth. It is also possible that the hair grows in different directions. This is especially common in the pubic area. To help with this, you can use an electric trimmer to comb all the hair in the same direction and get them all down to an equal length. Click here to learn more about grooming with a trimmer.
Admittedly, shaving with the grain will not give you as close of a shave. So, if you insist on shaving against the grain, this is what to do: on the first pass, only shave in the direction your hair grows (downwards). After this step, shaving against the direction of growth is much safer and won't tug at the skin as much. Reapply your moisturizing agent and shave against the grain.
Note: We recommend only shaving with the grain if you have sensitive skin.
Your razor should be fresh and sharp. A worn blade is likely to be much less efficient because it requires more passes over the same area to remove the unwanted hair; this will irritate the skin and cause micro-abrasions (little cuts). On the other hand, a sharp blade will remove as much hair as possible with minimal strokes. It's best to avoid this by replacing your blade every ten shaves.
An old razor tracks bacteria. This debris could seep into the freshly opened hair follicles and leave an angry razor rash in the most delicate areas.
Whether you are in the bath or shower, it is necessary to give your skin 5-10 minutes to soak in warm water before shaving. Warm water helps open up the pores and makes the hair softer; this makes the shaving process much easier and less abrasive on the skin.
Note: don't wait too long. Otherwise, the skin will wrinkle and make it harder to get a close shave. It's best to stick to the 5-10 minutes window.
Using a moisturizing agent like shaving cream or hair conditioner provides much-needed lubrication and makes the shaving process much smoother. Shaving on dry skin will cause major skin irritation including razor bumps and ingrown hairs. When the skin lacks moisture, it can become rough. Dragging a razor on an already rough surface can aggravate the skin and increase the risk of razor bumps. In the spur of the moment, you may be thinking that it is saving you time but it is not helping!
Using short and light strokes will ensure that the skin won't be tugged during the hair removal process. With long strokes, we tend to apply more pressure on the razor. This extra weight is enough to irritate, nic, and scrape the skin.
Investing in a pH-balanced cleanser is an important step to make sure that no lingering bacteria seeps into the freshly opened hair follicles after hair removal. If the oil, dirt, and bacteria that accumulate throughout the day are not removed before hair removal, they will cause the rashy razor bumps we all know and hate. So it's best to avoid that altogether by ensuring that the skin is clean and prepped before going in with a razor.
Before we move on, let's take a closer look at pH and why it's so important to find pH-balanced products.
pH stands for potential for hydrogen. The pH level of the skin refers to how acidic or alkaline the skin is on a scale from 1-14. On the pH scale, 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic (0 being the most acidic), and above 7 is alkaline (14 being the most alkaline). The ideal pH level for the skin like on the acidic side and ranges from 4.5 to 5.5 (on the acidic side). An acidic pH kills bacteria and keeps the skin balanced, hydrated, and rejuvenated. An acidic pH helps keep your skin balanced, hydrated, healthy, and radiant.
So what does all that mean? Simply put, the skin must maintain a balance of acidity and alkalinity in order to combat germs, fight infection, retain/store nutrients and minerals and protect you against external stresses.
If the pH balance is off, the skin can have adverse reactions. See for yourself:
In sum, it is necessary to maintain a balanced pH so that you don't have to deal with the consequences of your skin being too alkaline or too acidic.
Exfoliating before shaving is important for 2 reasons:
First, Bushbalm™ sugar scrubs prevent razor bumps by removing the debris (for lack of a better word) that clogs the pores. When we shave, the hair follicle is opened. Microscopic debris on the surface of the skin will then inevitably fall into these openings and clog the pores. If the pore is clogged, the growing hair strand will not be able to break past the skin's surface and instead will become trapped - causing ingrown hairs. Bushbalm™ scrubs give the pores a thorough cleaning so that your hair can grow back normally instead of getting trapped.
Second, Bushbalm™ ultra-hydrating sugar scrubs ensure that the interaction between blade and skin is as gentle as possible by softening the skin and hair. When the skin is dry while shaving the razor blade will not glide smoothly. Instead, it will tug on the hair and skin which can create micro-abrasions (mini cuts). Similar to if you fall off a bike and skid your knee, you may experience a skid-like rash or razor bumps hours after your shave. Bushbalm™ sugar scrubs will give your skin an irresistibly smooth look and feel. The star ingredient responsible for this baby-smooth effect is Jojoba Oil. Jojoba Oil is one of our key ingredients in all our products - including our exfoliating sugar scrubs. Jojoba oil mimics your body's natural moisturizing properties, which allow for extra hydration and as a result, super smooth skin. The nourishing essential oils within Bushbalm™ sugar scrubs will enable your razor to glide with ease and minimize razor bumps.
It is necessary to go in with a treatment oil after hair removal. Moisturizing and rehydrating the skin is an essential step in all skin care routines. Products such as exfoliants, razor blades, waxing strips etc., can strip the skin of its natural oils. The skin is the barrier between the body and the outside world. If the skin is dry, it cracks and the barrier becomes less resistant to bacteria and infection. This is why it’s so important to keep your skin moisturized. When the skin is moisturized, it is more intact and better able to defend against foreign agents
An effective treatment oil will soothe the skin and heal any skin irritations. Bushbalm’s treatment oils are packed with a combination of rich oils that combat dryness and replenish your skin after hair removal. Each formula is infused with Tea Tree Oil - a natural healer with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. This star ingredient provides a soothing sensation to calm redness, swelling, and inflammation.
Note: Just because you do not shave daily does not mean you should not treat the areas you shave on a daily basis. Applying a soothing treatment oil really helps reduce inflammation/irritation and prevents razor bumps from occurring even days after your shave.
The Bermuda Treatment Oil is a 100% natural and vegan skincare product that naturally reduces the look of hyperpigmentation and dark spots found anywhere on the body. The Bermuda formula is designed to gently break down melanin that is built up in the skin and even out the skin tone over time. The combination of fractionated coconut carrier oil, lemon essential oil, and rare copaiba oil works to diffuse the appearance of dark spots and blemishes.
How To Use: Gently massage the oil onto the desired areas; think bikini line, underarms, knees, or anywhere else skin is experiencing hyperpigmentation or dark spots. For best results, use on a daily basis and/or right after stepping out of the shower.

The Nude Oil is designed to eradicate ingrown hairs and treat razor bumps. Made from the highest quality of natural oils to ensure a soft and luxurious feeling on your skin Nude Oil quickly soothes ingrown hairs, redness, bumps, and irritations caused by hair removal. Nude Oil is infused with Jojoba and Copaiba oils that work to soften the skin and soothe skin irritation. It also contains tea tree oil and grape seed oil: tea tree is a natural healer that protects the skin from bacteria, while the grape seed allows the mixture to dry into the skin quickly and seamlessly.
The Nude Collection is virtually scentless and meant to restore your skin’s natural moisture - not add extra moisture. If you prefer a clean scent, The Nude Collection is for you! This collection will treat your razor bumps without a lingering scent.
How To Use: Gently massage Sweet Escape anywhere on the body or specifically places where razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and other skin irritations occur when removing hair.
Similar to Nude Oil, Sweet Escape Oil will target ingrown hairs and treat razor bumps. The difference between the two lies in the scent and level of hydration. The Sweet Escape Collection is ultra-hydrating and has a soft and sweet aroma of tangerine and vanilla, similar to a creamsicle. Sweet Escape will quickly soften skin and hair found in sensitive areas, including the pubic area, underarms, legs, and face. We recommend the Sweet Escape Collection if you are looking for a yummy scent and ultra-hydrating products.
How To Use: Gently massage Sweet Escape anywhere on the body or places where razor bumps, ingrown hairs, and other skin irritations occur when removing hair. For a final technique, you should begin trimming before you shave.
Imagine this: you’re getting a haircut, and your barber walks out with just a razor and shaving cream to cut your full head of hair - no clippers, trimmers, or scissors. Wouldn’t that be absurd! (unless you’re bald, then that’s normal - but for the purpose of this analogy pretend you have long locks of hair). Surely it’d be a very long and uncomfortable experience for both parties involved. In reality, this wouldn’t happen because of the length of the hair.
It seems obvious but this logic is often forgotten when it comes to shaving pubic hair. When pubic hair gets to a certain length, it must be trimmed before going in with a razor. If the body hair is too long the razor will tug on the skin as opposed to gliding smoothly. When the skin is pulled and tugged too much, the risk of getting nicks and cuts increases. Nics and cuts can be super painful and can get infected, leaving a rash of razor bumps in their place.
You can even ditch the razor and just stick to trimming. This will eliminate the risk of razor bumps! The blade of a trimmer does not reach the surface of the skin. As such, there is no risk of the blade tugging or pulling on the skin while it cuts the hair down.
To uphold our mission to encourage skincare everywhere, the Francesca Trimmer™ can be used anywhere on the body! It’s really up to you where you decide to trim. You have the liberty to trim your armpits, legs, face, stomach, pubic hair, toes, back - wherever you want a little cleanup. Click here to learn about how to use the Francesca Trimmer™.
Francesca has a built-in safeguard designed to allow the trimmer to fit into the grooves and crevices of your body without nicking or cutting your skin. With the Francesca Trimmer™, you can adjust the length of your body hair to 3mm or 6mm. The trimmer comes with the 6mm guard on. This guard can easily be removed to reveal the 3mm guard - click here to learn how to switch out the guards.
A razor is designed to achieve as close a shave as possible. When we shave, the first blade of the razor will lift the hair strand so the next blade can slice it off - click here to learn how to properly shave with a razor.
The trimmer is designed to trim the hair down rather than remove it all off. In other words, an electric trimmer will not cut the hair down to the skin’s surface. The Francesca Trimmer™ is made up of a comb and blade that work together to trim the hair: the comb lifts the strands upright so that the blade can trim all the hair at the same length. The comb acts as a protective barrier between the blade and the skin. The comb prevents the blade from reaching the skin and cutting the hair down to the surface of the skin. This minimizes the risk of ingrown hairs, razor burn, nics and cuts, and irritated skin.

]]>We call our routine for razor burn the 'skincare everywhere' routine! It's a fool-proof regimen thats proven to effectively soothe razor burn. At the end of this article we showcase before and after photos of clients who've experienced razor burn on their bikini line.
Before we get into the routine let's talk more about razor burn. Shaving is a convenient and easy way to get rid of unwanted hair, but razor burn is a common side effect. Razor burn is the result of an unpleasant interaction between the razor blade, body hair, and skin. When you get razor burn you'll notice redness, irritation, discomfort, and stinging.
Shaving imposes a constant stress on the skin. There is something called the lipid barrier layer, which keeps moisture in the tissues and controls the entry of external chemicals into the deeper layers of the skin. When shaving you can compromise this layer, which results in dehydrated skin and often razor burn.
"frequent friction causes dark spots and ingrown hairs. You may notice where your skin touches (i.e. the thighs, underarms etc.) there are dark areas and hyperpigmentation - that is from friction." - Dr. Arumala
When we think of skincare routines we often ignore the pubic region. According to our annual customer survey more than *50% of respondents suffer from razor burn. These 5 steps will take you through the recommended routine for your bikini line, underarms and pubic region!
Before showering, gently buff your skin with our Dry Brush, as this is a powerful way to exfoliate and detoxify your skin. Dry brushing will improve blood circulation, smooth out the appearance of cellulite, increase the skin's ability to take on moisturizers and of course exfoliate the skin.
According to board certified gynecologist, Dr. Arumala, “dry brushing opens up the pores so the skin can fully ingest whatever you are treating your skin with. The dry brush can be used in conjunction with treatment oils, body washes, exfoliating scrubs and body moisturizers, to make your products more effective.”
To get best results, use a dry brush 2-3 times a week.
An exfoliating scrub will soften the skin and hair as much as possible before hair removal. This will allow the razor to glide over the skin with ease resulting in fewer symptoms of razor burn.
It's recommended to use a sugar and oil based scrub, as this will exfoliate the skin and provide additional nourishment to your pubic region. If the skin is dry while shaving, then the razor blade will not glide smoothly. Instead, it will tug on the hair and skin which can create micro-abrasions (mini cuts) leading to razor burn.
Similar to if you fall off a bike and skid your knee, you may experience a skid-like rash or "razor burn" hours after your shave.
"By exfoliating my pubic area I've seen dramatic changes to my skin. My razor burn has been almost inexistent!" - Bushbalm Customer
Furthermore, sugar scrubs prevent razor burn by removing the dirt, oil and dead skin cells that may clog your pores. If the pore is clogged, the growing hair strand will not be able to break past the skin's surface and instead will become trapped, often leading to more ingrown hair and razor burn.
This is a critical step in preventing razor burn. We recommend using an exfoliating body scrub that contains Jojoba Oil and/or Copaiba Oil.
The final step before going in with a razor should be trimming your pubic region. A common mistake is trying to shave your pubic hair when it is far too long. This leads to frustration and razor burn.
It seems like obvious logic, but it's often forgotten. For trimming your pubic hair we recommend trimming to 4mm, as this is an optimal height for clean cuts. We recommend finding a pubic hair trimmer with guards to the optimal length.
Everyone has their own technique and preference when it comes to shaving, but we recommend always making sure you use a moisturizing agent, a razor with a sharp blade and always shave with the grain. These steps will decrease the possibility of razor burn.
It's not always possible to prevent razor burn, so you often need to use a treatment product or soothing oil. After shaving your skin can be sensitive, so we recommend using a gentle razor burn or ingrown hair oil.
Products such as exfoliants, razor blades and waxing strips can strip the skin of its natural oils, which is why a soothing oil is recommended. This is why it’s so important to keep your skin moisturized. When the skin is moisturized, it is more intact and better able to defend against foreign agents
Shaving your pubic hair likely isn't a daily routine. Regardless of this we recommend using your soothing oil on a daily basis to soften the skin and hair.
Shaving on dry skin will cause major skin irritation, including razor burn and ingrown hairs. When the skin lacks moisture, it can become rough. Dragging a razor on a rough surface will aggravate the skin. Using a moisturizing agent (whether it's shaving cream or even conditioner) will allow the razor to glide effortlessly on the skin and minimize tugging.
Your razor should be fresh and sharp. A sharp blade will remove as much hair as possible with minimal strokes. Otherwise, when a razor is dull, it takes more strokes over the same area to remove the unwanted hair. This will irritate the skin and cause micro-abrasions (little cuts) on the surface. It's best to avoid this by replacing your blade every ten shaves.
Move the razor in the same direction that your hair grows to prevent razor burn. Shaving with the grain will minimize tugging and ensure a seamless interaction between blade and skin. Shaving against the grain increases the risk of irritation and cuts. Typically when you shave against the grain you will experience razor burn or itchy pubic hair.
When your razor is dull, it takes more strokes to remove your unwanted hair. The 3-4 extra strokes irritate the skin substantially by causing micro-abrasions on the surface. Micro-abrasions are wounds to the top layer of skin that occur when the skin is rubbed aggressively. The abrasions leave the skin vulnerable to infection and irritation - causing the dreaded itchy razor bumps to appear in the most delicate places. Make sure to maintain a sharp razor blade. We recommend switching out your razor blade at least every ten shaves.
Throughout the day, dirt and oil accumulate on the surface of our skin. If you remove hair without properly cleaning the area beforehand, you run the risk of infecting the freshly opened hair follicles. This debris, for a lack of better words, can seep into your skin causing a red, angry razor burn.
Dry shaving is something you should never do! When the skin lacks moisture, it can become rough and bumpy. Dragging a razor on an already rough surface can aggravate the skin and lead to uncomfortable razor burn.
Wearing tight clothing, especially tight underwear, after hair removal can cause ingrown hairs and razor burn. If too close to the skin, the fabric will trap the hair that is beginning to grow back and force them to grow sideways, leading to irritation.
According to Sarah Welsh, a gynecologist, body hair is a “natural anti-chafe mechanism” that acts as a buffer to protect the skin. When we remove body hair by shaving, the skin loses its protective layer. The skin becomes vulnerable to chafing. Chafing is when the skin becomes raw and irritated from being rubbed by skin, clothing, or other materials. The raw, irritated, and inflamed hair follicles will cause an angry razor rash to appear.
We spoke with a board-certified gynecologist, Dr. Arumala, to understand the effects of wearing tight clothing immediately after hair removal. According to Dr. Arumala, "frequent friction causes dark spots and ingrown hairs. You may notice where your skin touches (i.e. the thighs, underarms etc.) there are dark areas and hyperpigmentation - that is from friction." All in all, it is best to avoid tight clothing after shaving.
We recommend using either: 1) 100% cotton underwear; and or 2) less tight undies. 100% cotton undies are a good alternative to use after hair removal as this material does not bother the skin as much. In addition, looser underwear will minimize friction and irritation.

Shaving is a convenient and easy way to get rid of unwanted hair, but razor burn is a common side effect. Razor burn is the result of an unpleasant interaction between the razor blade, body hair, and skin. The symptoms of razor burn include; redness, irritation, discomfort, and stinging.

Shaving imposes a constant stress on the skin. There is something called our lipid barrier layer, which keeps moisture in the tissues and controls the entry of external chemicals into the deeper layers of the skin. When shaving you can compromise this layer, which results in dehydrated skin.

Dull razor
When your razor is dull, it takes more strokes to remove your unwanted hair. The 3-4 extra strokes irritate the skin substantially by causing micro-abrasions on the surface. Micro-abrasions are wounds to the top layer of skin that occur when the skin is rubbed aggressively. The abrasions leave the skin vulnerable to infection and irritation - causing the dreaded rashy razor burn to appear in the most delicate places. Make sure to maintain a sharp razor blade. We recommend using a razor blade max 10 times before switching it out for a new one.
Lack of proper cleaning
Throughout the day, dirt and oil accumulates on the surface of our skin. If you remove hair without properly cleaning the area beforehand, you run the risk of infecting the freshly opened hair follicles. Oils and dirt can seep into your skin causing a red and angry rash to appear in its place.
Dry shaving
Dry shaving is the worst! Dryness upon hair removal can leave your skin vulnerable to irritation. When the skin lacks moisture, it can become rough. Dragging a razor on an already rough surface can aggravate the skin and lead to uncomfortable razor burn. In the spur of the moment you may be thinking that it is saving you time but it really isn’t helping!
Tight clothing
Wearing tight clothing and/or undies can irritate newly shaved skin. It’s best to avoid tight clothing after shaving.
Swap out your razors regularly!
It is so crucial to switch out your razor blade on a regular basis. A sharp razor will remove as much hair as possible while minimizing the number of strokes it takes to sufficiently remove it. The less passes a razor takes on the skin, the less irritation the skin endures. We recommend using a razor blade max 10 times before switching it out for a new one.
Trim before shaving
Trimming before shaving is very important because it prevents blade clogs. If you go straight to work without a trim, you’ll notice your blade clogging more often. When hairs clogs the razor, the blade becomes less sharp. This translates to more strokes needed to sufficiently remove the hair. The extra strokes will irritate the skin and cause micro-abrasions on the surface. Trimming the hair down before shaving will minimize blade clog and in turn prevent razor burn.

Always use a moisturizing agent to shave
Using a moisturizing agent (like a shaving cream or even conditioner) allows the blade to move more smoothly on your skin. TIP: use a natural and/or scent-free shaving cream to prevent skin irritation.
Shave with the grain
Shaving in the same direction of growth as the hair is very important This is a guaranteed way to avoid razor burn. Shaving with the grain minimizes tugging on the skin and hair. Whereas shaving against the grain increases the risk of irritation, nics, cuts, and razor burn.

Be patient when you shave
Although you may be in a rush, take your time shaving. If you speed shave it increases the risk of nics, uncomfortable cuts, and skin tenderness. These openings could become infected and causing an angry razor rash.
Depending on your hair growth, do not shave daily
You may find it necessary to shave daily, but shaving daily will increase your chances of razor burn. Through shaving daily, you are not allowing your skin to heal and replenish itself from the previous shave.
Use a soothing oil on a daily basis
Just because you don't shave daily doesn't mean you shouldn't treat the areas you shave on a daily basis. Applying a soothing treatment oil really helps reduce inflammation/irritation and prevent razor burn from occurring even days after your shave.
Razor burn and razor bumps are two different conditions but often occur at the same time. Razor burn is the result of an unpleasant interaction between the razor blade and your skin. Razor bumps, on the other hand, are ingrown hairs (link ingrown hairs collection).

At such a young age, the skin regenerates (sheds dead skin cells) extremely quickly. As a result, babies always have a fresh and soft top layer of skin. As we age, the skin regenerates at a much slower pace which means that dead skin cells rest on the surface for a longer period of time. The result is skin that looks dull and feels dry - no fun.
So how can you get back to baby-smooth skin? The answer is simple: you must exfoliate! Exfoliation will speed up the skin's regeneration process by removing dead skin cells to reveal a new and smooth layer of skin.
We have developed ultra-thin sugar based exfoliating scrubs that will leave your skin looking & feeling as smooth as a baby's bottom at all times. But, if I haven't yet convinced you that you need this scrub in your life, allow me to give you 5 reasons as to why you'll love our exfoliating sugar scrubs.
Our sugar scrubs will give your skin an irresistibly smooth look and feel. The star ingredient responsible for this baby-smooth effect is Jojoba Oil. Jojoba Oil is one of our key ingredients in all of our products - including our exfoliating sugar scrubs. Jojoba oil mimics your body's natural moisturizing properties which allow for extra hydration and as a result, super smooth skin.
All of our exfoliating body scrubs are made with simple, natural ingredients that are gentle and will not strip your skin of its natural moisture. As a result, your skin will be left feeling nourished and rejuvenated after exfoliation - as opposed to feeling dried out.

Using any one of the Bushbalm™ exfoliating scrubs will effectively prevent razor bumps and burn. Here's how:
1) Our scrubs will prevent razor burn by moisturizing & softening your skin before hair removal. If the skin is dry while shaving, then the razor blade will not glide smoothly. Instead, it will tug on the hair and skin which can create micro-abrasions (mini cuts). Similar to if you fall off a bike and skid your knee, you may experience a skid-like rash or "razor burn" hours after your shave. Our scrubs are packed with nourishing essential oils that will soften the skin, allowing your razor to glide with ease and minimize razor burn.
2) Our scrubs will prevent razor bumps by removing the dirt, oil and dead skin cells that may clog your pores. If the pore is clogged, the growing hair strand will not be able to break past the skin's surface and instead will become trapped - causing an ingrown hair. Our scrubs give the pores a thorough cleaning so that your hair can grow back normally instead of getting trapped.
The key to smooth skin is removing the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin; in other words, speeding up the skin's regeneration process. The fine sugar that makes up our scrubs will naturally buff away dead skin and work hard to unclog any pores. By removing the top layer of dead skin, our scrubs will effectively reveal fresh, new and healthier-looking skin.
Each sugar scrub is designed to target and treat a number of specific skin challenges such as Keratosis Pilaris, ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation and dark spots, razor bumps and burn, and the list goes on. Click here to learn about the specific skin concerns each scrub targets.
Overall, you will love our exfoliating sugar scrubs because they: 1) will keep your skin smooth; 2) are 100% natural; 3) will prevent razor bumps and burn; 4) remove dead skin; and 5) target and treat specific skin concerns. With benefits like that, what's not to love?!
"This scrub is a must have. It is very different from other scrubs on the market. It is lightweight , lightly scented, and very moisturizing. The combination of oils and sugar makes your skin feel wonderful. I have used higher end scrubs and this is right up there. I use it all over my body , my skin feels baby soft after a shower. Highly, highly recommended. 5 ⭐️"
"I have only used this once, & I am SOLD. I used this on my “down there” area before shaving & when I tell you I have never gotten that close of a shave & been THAT smooth before, I swear I’m not lying. I’m seriously shook. I will be a customer for life. If you’re debating this purchase, just get it. You won’t regret it!"
"I bought this scrub along with the dry brush and the nude oil for after, and I cannot express enough how legitimate this product is. I've tried so many products that claim to help treat ingrown hairs and razor burn that do absolutely nothing after a month of use. Bushbalm's products are like no other - visible results in as little as two to three weeks! I just ordered my next box because Bushbalm is like having shampoo or a loofa in the shower - a must have!"
